Old Goa: A Glimpse of the Bygone Era

Old Goa was once a bustling metropolis but what remains today is a handful of ancient but impressive churches and a small village. Though it is nothing like what it used to be about 500 years ago, you can easily picture the beautiful town that it once was by walking through its streets and the huge churches and convents. Many of these churches have been transformed into museums and Old Goa has been declared a World Heritage Site.

It is interesting to note that in the 17th century, Old Goa was bigger and more happening than the European cities like London and Lisbon and it was known as the “Rome of the East”. A testimony to its glorious past are the very impressive churches that still stand tall in Old Goa, the most prominent of them being Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Church of St Cajetan.

The best time to plan a trip to Old Goa while you are already staying in Goa would be either early in the morning or in the evening. Since Goa enjoys a tropical climate, you can visit it any time of the year as the temperature remains almost the same throughout.
